Davies, W. H. Young Emma. London: Sceptre, 1987. 0340405155 Paperback Good, sound copy. 7.5" x 5", 140pp. An account of a young woman, destitute and pregnant, who the poet Davies picked up one evening at a bus-stop. Davies was in his fifties and the extraordinary relationship between them culminated in their marriage. No less extraordinary is the story of the manuscript itself as detailed by the historian C. V. Wedgwood in a Foreword and supported by a letter about the book from George Bernard Shaw to Jonathan Cape which is included in an Appendix. As well as being an important piece of prose by Davies, this book gives an insight into the ethics of sex and publishing in the first part of the twentieth century.
