Notes Ex libris label of Edward Taylor of the Marquess of Headfort’s family to both volumes. Tan leather to spines and corners with raised bands and maroon leather labels. Gilt titles to the label. Marbled papers to boards. Rubbed and scuffed to leather. Area of leather lost to spine of volume one approx one cm by half a cm just nicking 2mm or so from the top edge of the maroon label on that volume. Tan leather near this area is surface scuffed. Three inch tear to the endpaper of volume two. Clean and sound.

Hardback. Printed in six volumes and bound in two, half leather, volumes with three volumes in each bound volume. First published in 1841 making this a very early edition. Text in French. Mathilde is the source of the saying "La vengeance se mange très-bien froide" or revenge is a dish best served cold.
