Notes Binding is presumed slightly later than the contents. Maroon labels are perhaps from an earlier binding. Title label to volume II has suffered some loss though the word Marriage is unaffected. The title label is neat and complete to volume I and the author label is complete to both volumes. Previous owner’s label stating A. T. Lloyd to both volumes’ endpapers. there is a tiny nick to the head of the front spine hinge to volume I. Some light foxing to prelims but title pages and text blocks are clean to both volumes. Binding is sound. A very attractive set with unusually bright papers to boards and neat, tight bindings.

Hardback. 344pp+324pp. Novel. Half bound in red leather with red, blue and yellow marbled papers on boards and matching marbled endpapers. Raised bands to spines with two maroon leather labels and gilt titles to each volume. Gilt to top edge. Also includes substantial essay, 38pp., on Ferrier, and Ferrier’s Recollections of visits to Ashestiel and Abbotsford (home of Sir Walter Scott). A note on the text: “Miss Ferrier’s novels have, since their first appearance, suffered curtailment in all subsequent editions. The present edition is the first reprint since from the original editions, and contains the whole of the omissions in other reprints.” attributed to GB, New Burlington Street, presumably George Bentley son of the publishing founder, and subsequent partner.
