Mary Elizabeth Braddon autograph

Braddon, M. E.
SKU 21199
Notes The thick cream paper feels very crisp and the corners are sharp. There are faintly visible textured marks from the back from old glue: I understand this has been removed from an album. One very tiny hole near the top suggests that it might have been pinned at one point. The face is very clean and the signature clear and legible.

Description

Autograph of Victorian novelist Mary Elizabeth Braddon best known for Lady Audley's Secret. She lived an unconventional life for a Victorian woman living with the publisher John Maxwell for over 12 years before the death of his wife allowed them to marry. She was stepmother to Maxwell’s 7 children and mother to the 5 children of their own union. Braddon had been brought up by her mother as a single parent after her father abandoned them which may have influenced her attitude to conventional marriage. Her sensation novels helped to support this large family. This autograph is evidently cut from a letter: yours very truly M. E. Braddon and ending with a flourish.
