Notes Spine rebacked in elather with raised bands, black leather label and gilt titles. Blind stamped floral device to each compartment. Marbled papers to boards show slight shelf wear. Leather corners are worn with some exposed board. Endpapers lightly tanned and with discolouration marks. Text block very clean with occasional very minor foxing.

Hardback. viii,299pp Irish born James Johnson joined the navy after a period apprenticed to a surgeon-apothecary and later passing his surgeon’s examination. He became a surgeon's mate and his experiences in Nova Scotia, Egypt and India former the basis of his expertise in tropical and other diseases. He served on HMS Valiant, HMS Cynthia and others. Whilst on HMS Impregnable he treated the then Duke of Clarence which lead in due course to his becoming physician extraordinary to the Duke on his accession to the throne as William IV.
