Notes Two neat, square tight volumes. Vellum is a little dull and dusty but the gilt is bright. Cloth panels to the sides have a few minor marks. Some scattered foxing within but mainly to the prelims. Ribbon bookmarks present but worn. A pretty set with an interesting provenance.

Hardback. Half bound in vellum. To both volumes, the signature and ex libris label with coat of arms of Hylda Madeleine James (nee Heath, later Bates) wife of George Millais James, grandson of James Everett Millais and Effie Gray, who was killed at Ypres in 1914. Hylda was the daughter of the politician and colliery owner Sir James Heath of Staffordshire. Two volumes complete with frontis portraits and further illustrations. Finely bound in vellum to the spine and corners and decorated in gilt to the spine. Cream cloth to boards. Marbled endpapers. Gilt to top edge. Ribbon book marks. Gift inscription to Hylda from ‘Bea’ to both volumes. xi,359+viii,367pp. Indexed. Edited by Kingsley’s wife Frances Eliza Kingsley.
