Hardback. First edition thus. Four volume set in gilt decorated red cloth with matching gilt decorated slipcase. Originally written as 23 pairs of biographies (not all of which have survived) matching a Greek biography with a similar Roman, the lives here have been split and arranged in chronological order with the comparisons as appendices in each relevant volume and repeated where necessary. The historical sweep makes for a cleaner overview for the modern reader. Introduction by Tom Holland. Illustrated by David Rooney.
