Hardback. xviii,316pp. Beautiful fine binding in tree-calf with gilt decorations, by Riviere and Son. First edition. A study of the Barbary or Ottoman slave trade and the “infinite number of souls...dragged into wretched captivity” (p.202). The raids peaked in the 17th century. Riviere and Son stamp to prelim. Decorative gilt borders to boards and gilt dentelles. Raised bands to spine green label and gilt titles to one compartments and repeated design in gilt to the remaining. Gilt to top edge. Marbled endpapers.
