Hardback. First edition from Manchester University Press’ Studies in Imperialism series. 196pp. 8 colour plates showing textiles and embroideries. Small number of integral black and white illustrations. focused on the Anglo-Indian silk trade and the work of manufacturer Thomas Wardle (1831-1909), owner of a small silk mill in Leek, Staffordshire, who taught William Morris to die yarn and print cloth. A chapter is given to the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement on the silk trade. Of interest to textile, fashion and design historians as well as those working on the British Empire, international trade or the industrial nineteenth century.
