Welcome to the home of C L Hawley Books. We have been supplying out of print and hard-to-find books to academics, libraries, collectors and readers since 2000. We pride ourselves on our customer service, our knowledge of our specialist stock, and our well packaged and promptly posted parcels of books. Our aim is to provide a service where out-of-print academic material in our specialist areas can easily be found, as well as finding new homes for children's books and local history.

We are always looking to buy literary criticism, other academic books (including history, psychology, philosophy, linguistics and biblical languages), children's poetry and fiction, and local history books. Please contact us if you have books you wish to sell.

Newly in Stock...

We have now catalogued and photographed a selection of German history, mainly on the rise of the NAZI party and World War Two. We have both English language and German language history in stock. We also have a small number of German literature titles, mainly fiction, in German or in translation.

We've been adding to our selection of works of feminist literary criticism plus we have an increased selection of works on nineteenth century women novelists.

We have a selection of Cyril Connolly's Horizon in stock.

A selection of postcolonial theory plus an increased selection of African fiction.

Our catalogues on Yorkshire and Lancashire including works of dialect poetry, and dialect dictionaries and etymologies, have now been largely all photographed so you can see what you are buying.

It features books reviews and news, a wide selections of links to websites on books and authors which we hope will prove to be a useful bibliographic resource, as well as our thoughts on education, literacy, libraries and more. Did you know?

As well as browsing our categories, other selections can be viewed as a group via the keywords Literature in Translation providing a selection of novels, poems, drama, literary criticism and other matter translated in to English; similarly the keywords Dual Language bring up a selection of en face or interlinear translations usefully combining the orignal text with the translation. The categories of such items will be their geographical literary category eg Russian Literature or African History and Literature but they can still be viewed together as a group using the keyword search.

We are now accepting all card payments via either Nochex or Paypal. You can select either at the checkout to pay by most credit or debit cards. You do not need to have a Nochex account to pay us via Nochex. If you wish to order by phone you can still do this and pay by sterling cheque or ask us further about what paying by nochex or paypal involves. Other options including bank transfer and sterling cheque are also available at the checkout.
