Hardback. 320pp. The seventeenth century lives and work of John Tradescant the Elder and his son: their plant collecting, their gardens, and the collection, ‘The Ark’, containing artefacts, weapons, coins, books, engravings, geological and zoological specimens that formed the basis of the Ashmolean Museum. Their most famous gardens included their own at South Lambeth, Oatland Palace in Surrey (where John Tradescant the Elder was keeper of His Majesty's Gardens, Vines, and Silkworms), New Hall, Essex for the 1st Duke of Buckingham, and others. Two small selections of black and white plates.
