| Notes | Somewhat rubbed to points. Loss to tail ends of spines and some rubbing, rolling and small tears to heads of spines. Minor marks to cloth. Volume three has some damage from a liquid spill that has marked a corner of the binding, the margins of the prelims and the margins of some of the plates. Tissue guards are tanned and there is some scattered foxing. Bindings are tight and square and gilt is bright. |

Hardback. The complete works of Shakespeare, illustrated in 6 volumes: 227, 496, 300, 576, 253, 487pp. Heavily decorated in gilt to front and spines. The set is dedicated by the publisher to the actor William Macready. The c 12 steel engravings with tissue guards to each volume mainly show William Macready in character as various members of the cast of Shakespearian characters. The illustrations also show a number of other prominent Victorian actors and actresses in character including Anna Mowatt and Isabella Glyn. Includes memoir of Macready. The set uses the popular Victorian spelling of Shakespeare’s name: Shakspere.
