Description
Hardback. First edition novel. From the library of British mathematician, and friend of Alan Turing, Norman Routledge. With Routledge’s full signature “Norman Arthur Routledge / October 1954” in an attractive script and a label “Norman Routledge / Eton Colledge”. Routledge, like Turing (and Isherwood) was gay. They met at Cambridge and corresponded in later life. Routledge was the recipient of the famous “yours in distress” letter sent in 1952 after Turing was charged with gross indecency and ends with Turing’s fears that his personal life would be used to discredit his work noting, “I’m afraid that the following syllogism may be used by some in the future. /Turing believes machines think/ Turing lies with men /Therefore machines do not think”. In later life Routledge was recorded reading the “yours in distress” letter by the BBC. After his degree Routledge was a fellow in mathematics at King's College, Cambridge and then went on to teach at Eton. Attractive dust jacket by Lynton Lamb with full wrap-around illustration. An interesting association copy.
