Description
Hardback. xiv, 345pp. Very attractively bound copy of this Victorian tale, a fictionalised account of the life of the fifth century philosopher Hypatia told from the perspective of the adventures of a monk Philammon in the political and religious disputes of the day. Extremely popular and well regarded in the nineteenth century though its anti-Semitic and anti-Catholic sentiments very much date the tale now. Introductory essay by the author. Half bound in leather with marbled papers to boards. Raised bands to spine with gilt titles to a red label and gilt decorative borders and banding to the spine compartments.
