Description

Hardback. Very attractive Mauchline / Fern Ware boards with leather spine decorated in gilt. With life of William Wordsworth. xxxi,566pp. Gilt to all edges. Frontis engraving plus a small number of engravings within. Mauchline ware originated in Scotland and is a form of decorated wood. It was very popular in the late 19th and early 20th century for small household items. The decorations, as here on the wooden boards, are often ferns. The endpapers might be newer than the book and have been reinforced to the inner hinges with blue fabric that feels like silk.
