Half-leather binding of July to December 1878 of The Queen, The Ladies' Newspaper and Court Chronicle. Women’s periodical “The Queen” was bought by Edward William Cox from its founder Samuel Beeton (husband of the famous cookery writer) and at the same time he bought another periodical “The Ladies' Paper”. There were merged in 1864 into The Queen, The Ladies' Newspaper and Court Chronicle and the editorship offered to Elizabeth Lowe. She edited it until her death in 1897. The large format pages are full of the news, fashions including knitting, domestic arts and society of the day, together with short fiction and other items of interest including music reviews and Christmas and New Year's card designs. A fascinating record. The Queen, The Ladies' Newspaper and Court Chronicle after further titles changes over the years eventually became Harper’s Bazaar. These pages have been finely bound in leather to the spine and corners with raised bands, lettered in gilt, to the spine and marble papers to the boards. 514pp. 13 colour plates (including map) and two black and white plates. 430 by 295mm (17 by 11½ inches).
